Tortuga Bay Guide
Tortuga Bay: Pristine Sands and Marine Marvels Guide
Tortuga Bay is a breathtaking beach located a short walk from Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. Renowned for its pristine white sand, turquoise waters, and abundant wildlife, it's a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Galapagos. The name "Tortuga Bay" translates to "Turtle Bay," a fitting moniker given the frequent sightings of marine turtles nesting on its shores. Tortuga Bay is divided into two main sections: Playa Brava (Wild Beach) and Playa Mansa (Gentle Beach). Playa Brava is characterized by its strong currents and waves, making it unsuitable for swimming but ideal for surfing and observing marine iguanas basking in the sun. Playa Mansa, located further along the bay, is a sheltered cove with calm, shallow waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. The mangroves surrounding Playa Mansa provide a haven for various bird species and juvenile marine life. Activities at Tortuga Bay include sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and wildlife observation. Marine iguanas are commonly seen along the shoreline, while white-tip reef sharks and marine turtles can be spotted while snorkeling or kayaking in Playa Mansa. The walk to Tortuga Bay itself is a scenic experience, passing through a forest of giant cacti and offering opportunities to observe land birds. Remember to bring your own snorkeling gear and be mindful of the fragile ecosystem.
Transportation
Tortuga Bay is accessible by a well-maintained paved path from the end of Charles Binford Avenue in Puerto Ayora. The walk takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Alternatively, you can take a water taxi from the Puerto Ayora pier to Playa Mansa for a small fee.
