Las Grietas Guide
Las Grietas: Swim in a Volcanic Crevice Guide
Plunge into the refreshing waters of Las Grietas, a series of volcanic crevices filled with crystal-clear brackish water. This unique swimming spot is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a chance to cool off and experience the geological wonders of the Galapagos Islands. The water is a mix of fresh water filtering down from the highlands and saltwater seeping in from the ocean. Las Grietas were formed by volcanic activity, creating deep cracks and fissures in the lava rock. Over time, these crevices filled with water, creating a series of natural swimming pools. The water is incredibly clear, allowing you to see the rock formations and marine life below. The contrast between the dark volcanic rock and the turquoise water creates a stunning visual spectacle. Swimming and snorkeling are the main activities at Las Grietas. The water is cool and refreshing, making it a welcome respite from the Galapagos heat. You can swim through the narrow crevices and explore the underwater world. Snorkeling gear can be rented nearby. Be aware that the rocks can be slippery, so wear appropriate footwear. There are no specific culinary traditions associated with Las Grietas, but you can find restaurants and cafes in Puerto Ayora offering a variety of local and international cuisine.
Transportation
To reach Las Grietas, take a short water taxi from the Puerto Ayora pier to the Finch Bay Hotel on the other side of the bay (approximately $1 per person). From there, follow the marked path for about a 20-minute walk. The path is rocky and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes.
