Crossing the Great Belt: An Engineering Marvel Guide

Prepare to be awestruck by the Storebælt Bridge, a monumental feat of engineering that connects the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen. More than just a bridge, it's a symbol of Denmark's ambition and ingenuity, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Great Belt strait. Whether you're driving across or admiring it from afar, the Storebælt Bridge is an unforgettable experience. The idea of a fixed link across the Great Belt dates back to the mid-19th century, but it wasn't until 1988 that construction finally began. The project was divided into two main parts: the East Bridge (a suspension bridge for road traffic) and the East Tunnel (for rail traffic). The East Bridge, with its impressive 6,790-meter length and towering pylons, is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. The entire project was completed in 1998, revolutionizing transportation between eastern and western Denmark. While you can't exactly "tour" the bridge in the traditional sense, the best way to experience it is by driving across! The views are simply spectacular, especially on a clear day. Consider stopping at one of the rest areas on either side of the bridge for photo opportunities. You can also take a ferry that passes under the bridge for a different perspective. While in Nyborg, be sure to sample some traditional Danish pastries like "wienerbrød" (Danish pastry) or "hindbærsnitter" (raspberry slices) at a local bakery.

Transportation

The Storebælt Bridge is easily accessible by car via the E20 motorway. You can also reach Nyborg by train; from the Nyborg train station, you can take a local bus or taxi to get closer to the bridge for better views. Bus lines 811 and 812 have stops near the bridge's approach.
