Mimara Museum Guide
Mimara Museum: A World of Art in the Heart of Zagreb Guide
Prepare to be amazed by the sheer breadth and diversity of the Mimara Museum's collection. This museum isn't just about Croatian art; it's a journey through global art history, showcasing masterpieces from ancient civilizations to the 20th century. From European paintings and sculptures to artifacts from the Near East and Far East, the Mimara Museum offers a truly international artistic experience. The Mimara Museum's collection is largely based on the private collection of Ante and Wiltrud Topić Mimara. Ante Mimara, a controversial art collector and restorer, donated his vast collection to the city of Zagreb in the 1980s. The museum opened its doors in 1987, housed in a neo-Renaissance building that once served as a gymnasium. The collection has been the subject of some debate and controversy regarding its authenticity and provenance, but it remains a significant cultural institution in Zagreb. Exploring the Mimara Museum is an adventure in itself. Wander through the galleries and admire works by renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Goya, and Renoir. Discover ancient Greek and Roman artifacts, marvel at the intricate details of Chinese porcelain, and explore the beauty of Islamic art. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and educational programs. After your visit, enjoy a meal at the museum's cafe or explore the surrounding area, which is home to numerous restaurants and cafes offering a variety of cuisines.
