People's Square (Pjaca) Guide
Pjaca: The Heartbeat of Split's Social Life Guide
Welcome to People's Square, or Pjaca (pronounced "pee-at-sa") as the locals affectionately call it, the vibrant heart of Split's social life. This bustling square, officially known as Narodni Trg, is more than just a pretty place; it's a gathering spot, a meeting point, and a stage for the everyday drama of Split. Surrounded by stunning architecture and buzzing with cafes and restaurants, Pjaca is the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere and feel the pulse of the city. Pjaca has been the center of Split's civic life since the 15th century. Over the centuries, it has witnessed countless events, from public celebrations to political rallies. The square is surrounded by historically significant buildings, including the Old Town Hall (Stara Gradska Vijećnica), a beautiful Gothic building that now serves as an exhibition space, and the Renaissance-era Karepić Palace. The clock tower, with its distinctive blue face, is a prominent landmark and a reminder of the square's long history. Today, Pjaca is a lively hub of activity. Relax at one of the many cafes and watch the world go by. Admire the architecture and soak up the atmosphere. In the evenings, the square comes alive with music and street performers. While Pjaca itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the surrounding restaurants offer a wide range of dining options, from traditional Dalmatian cuisine to international fare. Be sure to try some local specialties, such as pašticada (Dalmatian beef stew) or black risotto.
