St. Euphemia Church Guide
Ascend to Rovinj's Heart: St. Euphemia Church Guide
Perched atop Rovinj's highest point, St. Euphemia Church isn't just a place of worship; it's a landmark that defines the city's skyline and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the charming old town below. This Baroque masterpiece is a must-see for any visitor to Rovinj, offering a glimpse into the region's rich history and artistic heritage. Prepare to be captivated by its grandeur and the stunning vistas that await you at the summit. The church's history is intertwined with the legend of St. Euphemia, a young Christian martyr from Chalcedon (modern-day Turkey). According to local lore, her sarcophagus miraculously floated to Rovinj's shores in the 9th century. A church was initially built to house her relics, but the current structure dates back to the 18th century. The most striking feature is the 60-meter-high bell tower, topped with a copper statue of St. Euphemia that rotates with the wind, acting as a weather vane and a symbol of the city. Visitors can explore the church's interior, admiring the Baroque architecture, intricate altars, and the sarcophagus believed to contain St. Euphemia's remains. The real highlight, however, is climbing the bell tower. The ascent is a bit challenging, involving narrow wooden stairs, but the reward is well worth the effort. From the top, you'll be treated to unparalleled views of Rovinj's terracotta rooftops, the sparkling Adriatic, and the surrounding islands. Don't forget your camera! While in Rovinj, be sure to sample the local seafood, particularly the fresh fish and shellfish prepared in the traditional Istrian style. Many restaurants offer dishes featuring truffles, another regional delicacy.
Transportation
Rovinj's old town is largely pedestrianized. The church is located at the highest point of the old town and is best reached on foot. Be prepared for a steep climb through narrow, cobbled streets. Parking is available outside the old town walls, but can be limited, especially during peak season.
