Upper Lakes Guide
Explore the Majestic Upper Lakes of Plitvice Guide
The Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera) of Plitvice Lakes National Park offer a dramatic and diverse landscape compared to the Lower Lakes. Characterized by larger, deeper lakes and more densely forested surroundings, the Upper Lakes provide a sense of wilderness and grandeur. Prepare to be captivated by the scale of the scenery and the abundance of natural beauty. This section of the park is a must-see for those seeking a more immersive and challenging hiking experience. Like the Lower Lakes, the Upper Lakes owe their existence to the unique geological processes of travertine deposition. Over thousands of years, calcium carbonate from the water has built up natural dams, creating a series of interconnected lakes and waterfalls. The Upper Lakes are generally older and more mature than the Lower Lakes, resulting in a more established ecosystem and a greater diversity of plant and animal life. The area has been protected for decades, ensuring the preservation of this natural wonder for future generations. Exploring the Upper Lakes involves a network of well-marked hiking trails that wind along the shores and through the surrounding forests. These trails offer stunning viewpoints of the lakes and waterfalls, as well as opportunities to observe the local flora and fauna. Electric boats provide transportation across some of the larger lakes, allowing visitors to cover more ground and experience the scenery from different perspectives. Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trails can be challenging in places.
