Lower Lakes Guide
Discover the Emerald Heart of Plitvice: The Lower Lakes Guide
Prepare to be mesmerized by the Lower Lakes of Plitvička Jezera National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Croatia's most breathtaking natural wonders. This section of the park showcases a series of interconnected turquoise lakes cascading through dramatic canyons and lush forests. The Lower Lakes offer a more intimate and rugged experience compared to the Upper Lakes, with closer proximity to the waterfalls and unique geological formations. Get ready to immerse yourself in a landscape that feels straight out of a fairytale. The Plitvice Lakes system has been forming for thousands of years, a result of the unique geological and hydrological conditions of the region. The porous limestone bedrock allows water to seep through, creating underground streams and rivers. Over time, these waters have dissolved the limestone, forming the lakes and the travertine barriers that create the stunning waterfalls. The process is ongoing, constantly reshaping the landscape and creating new formations. The area was declared a national park in 1949 to protect its fragile ecosystem. Visitors to the Lower Lakes can enjoy a variety of activities, including walking along well-maintained wooden boardwalks that wind through the lakes and waterfalls. Several hiking trails offer different perspectives and levels of difficulty. Don't miss the iconic Veliki Slap, the largest waterfall in Croatia, located at the end of the Lower Lakes. Boat tours are also available on Lake Kozjak, providing a relaxing way to experience the beauty of the park. While there are no restaurants directly within the Lower Lakes area, you'll find several dining options near the entrance and in the surrounding villages, offering traditional Croatian cuisine.
