Gandoca Beach, a secluded and pristine stretch of coastline within the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica, offers a truly unique and untouched experience. The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge was established to protect this critical habitat, along with the diverse ecosystem of rainforest, mangroves, and coral reefs. The local community actively participates in conservation efforts, working to protect the turtles and their nesting sites. While swimming is not always advisable at Gandoca Beach due to strong currents, there are still plenty of activities to enjoy. Take a long walk along the beach and admire the dramatic scenery. Explore the surrounding rainforest on a guided hike, keeping an eye out for wildlife. Visit the Gandoca Lagoon, a freshwater lagoon located just behind the beach, which is home to a variety of birds and other animals. During nesting season (typically March-May), you may have the opportunity to participate in a guided turtle nesting tour. Transportation
Gandoca Beach is accessible from Manzanillo, but requires a hike. You can take the bus to Manzanillo from Puerto Viejo, and then hike south along the coast into the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. The hike to Gandoca Beach can take several hours, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water. Alternatively, you can hire a local guide in Manzanillo to take you to Gandoca Beach.
