Parque de la Sal (Salt Park) Guide

Beyond the Cathedral: Discover the Wonders of Parque de la Sal Guide

Parque de la Sal, or Salt Park, is more than just the home of the famous Salt Cathedral; it's a comprehensive complex offering a variety of attractions and activities for visitors of all ages. While the cathedral is undoubtedly the star attraction, the park itself provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of salt mining in the region and offers opportunities for adventure and relaxation. From exploring the Brine Museum to enjoying panoramic views from the Salt Mine's exterior, Parque de la Sal is a destination in its own right. The park's history is intertwined with the history of salt mining in Zipaquirá, which dates back to pre-Columbian times. The indigenous Muisca people were the first to extract salt from the area, and salt has been a valuable resource for the region ever since. The park was developed to showcase the history and importance of salt mining, as well as to provide a space for recreation and tourism. In addition to the Salt Cathedral, the park features a number of other attractions, including the Brine Museum, which explains the process of salt extraction, and a climbing wall for adventurous visitors. Beyond the Salt Cathedral, Parque de la Sal offers a range of activities. Explore the Brine Museum to learn about the science and history of salt extraction. Take a guided tour of the park to discover its hidden gems and learn about its cultural significance. Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from the park's observation points. For the adventurous, try the climbing wall or the zip line. The park also features a number of restaurants and cafes where you can relax and enjoy a meal or a snack. You can find traditional Colombian food here, but also international options. Don't miss the opportunity to purchase salt-related souvenirs at the park's gift shops.

Transportation

To reach Parque de la Sal, follow the same directions as for the Salt Cathedral. Take a bus from the Portal del Norte bus terminal in Bogotá to Zipaquirá. Once in Zipaquirá, you can take a taxi or a local bus to the park, which is located just outside the town center. The park is well-signposted, and most taxi drivers will be familiar with the location.
