El Peñol (La Piedra del Peñol) Guide

Conquer the Rock: Breathtaking Views from El Peñol Guide

El Peñol, also known as La Piedra del Peñol, is an iconic monolith rising dramatically from the landscape near Guatapé. This massive rock formation offers unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding lake and islands. Climbing the 740 steps to the top is a must-do for any visitor to the region, rewarding you with a truly unforgettable experience. Prepare for a bit of a workout, but the breathtaking vistas are well worth the effort. The history of El Peñol is intertwined with the indigenous Tahamíes people, who revered the rock long before the arrival of the Spanish. In modern times, the rock was first officially climbed in 1954. The staircase was later built, making it accessible to tourists. The ongoing dispute between Guatapé and El Peñol (the town) over ownership of the rock is humorously represented by the unfinished "GI" painted on the side, intended to spell "Guatapé" but abandoned due to local opposition. The primary activity at El Peñol is, of course, climbing the staircase to the summit. Once at the top, you can explore the various viewpoints, take stunning photos, and enjoy the refreshing breeze. There are also souvenir shops and food stalls at the top, where you can purchase snacks and drinks. While El Peñol itself doesn't have a unique culinary tradition, you'll find vendors selling typical Colombian snacks like arepas and empanadas. Don't miss the opportunity to try a refreshing "michelada" (a savory beer cocktail) while enjoying the view.

Transportation

You can reach El Peñol by bus from Medellín. Buses depart regularly from the Terminal del Norte in Medellín and take approximately 2-3 hours to reach El Peñol. From El Peñol town, you can take a tuk-tuk or taxi to the base of the rock. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Guatapé to El Peñol, which is a shorter and more frequent option. The bus will drop you off near the base of the rock.
