Mud Volcano Guide
Get Down and Dirty: Experience the Therapeutic Mud Volcano Guide
Venture outside of Cartagena and experience something truly unique: a mud volcano! El Totumo, as it's known locally, is a small, naturally formed volcano filled with warm, therapeutic mud. Locals and tourists alike flock to this unusual attraction to immerse themselves in the mineral-rich mud, believed to have healing properties for the skin and body. It's a fun, quirky, and unforgettable experience. The Mud Volcano, or Volcán de Totumo, has been a local attraction for generations. Legend has it that a local priest, believing the volcano to be the work of the devil, sprinkled holy water on it, transforming the lava into the soothing mud that exists today. While the scientific explanation is more grounded in geological processes, the legend adds to the volcano's mystique. The main activity at the Mud Volcano is, of course, taking a mud bath! Climb the steps to the top of the volcano and carefully descend into the crater filled with warm, buoyant mud. Locals are on hand to offer massages and help you navigate the slippery terrain. After your mud bath, you'll be escorted to a nearby lagoon where local women will help you wash off the mud (for a small tip). It's a truly unique and memorable experience. While there aren't specific culinary traditions directly linked to the volcano itself, many tours include lunch at a nearby restaurant where you can sample traditional Colombian cuisine.
