The Lingering Garden Guide
The Lingering Garden: A Masterpiece of Classical Chinese Garden Design Guide
The Lingering Garden, also known as Liu Yuan, is one of the four most famous classical Chinese gardens in China, renowned for its exquisite design, serene atmosphere, and harmonious blend of architecture and nature. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit destination for tourists seeking to experience the beauty and tranquility of traditional Chinese gardens. The garden showcases the artistry of Suzhou's landscape design and offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. The Lingering Garden was originally built during the Ming Dynasty in 1593 by Xu Taishi, a retired official. It was later acquired by Liu Shu, who extensively renovated and expanded the garden, giving it the name "Liu Yuan" (Liu's Garden). Over the centuries, the garden has changed hands several times and undergone various renovations, but it has retained its original design principles and aesthetic appeal. Visitors to the Lingering Garden can wander through its winding paths, admire its meticulously crafted rockeries, and relax by its tranquil ponds. The garden features numerous pavilions, corridors, and halls, each offering unique views and perspectives. The garden is also known for its collection of penjing (miniature landscapes) and its exquisite calligraphy and paintings. While the Lingering Garden itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the surrounding area offers a variety of Suzhou-style restaurants where you can enjoy local delicacies like squirrel-shaped mandarin fish and Biluochun tea.
