Jinkeng Rice Terraces: Golden Fields of Wonder Guide

The Jinkeng Rice Terraces, also known as the Dazhai Rice Terraces, are a spectacular section of the Longsheng Rice Terraces, renowned for their dramatic landscapes and stunning views, particularly during sunrise and sunset. "Jinkeng" translates to "Golden Pit," a fitting name when the rice ripens and the terraces transform into a sea of gold. This area is less crowded than the more popular Ping'an terraces, offering a more tranquil and immersive experience. The Jinkeng terraces, like the rest of the Longsheng terraces, are a product of centuries of labor by the Zhuang people. They represent a remarkable feat of engineering and sustainable agriculture. The terraces were built to maximize the use of limited arable land in the mountainous region, allowing the local communities to cultivate rice and sustain themselves. The intricate irrigation systems, still in use today, are a testament to their ingenuity. A visit to Jinkeng offers numerous opportunities for exploration and adventure. Hiking is a must, with trails leading to various viewpoints, including the famous West Hill Music viewpoint. You can also explore the local Yao villages, learn about their culture, and sample their traditional cuisine. Consider staying overnight in a local guesthouse to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the golden terraces. The local Yao people are known for their hospitality and unique customs, including the long hair tradition of the women.
