Yongling Tomb: Unearthing the Kingdom of Shu Guide
Step back in time and delve into the mysteries of the ancient Shu Kingdom at Yongling Tomb, the final resting place of Wang Jian, the founding emperor of the Former Shu dynasty. This unique archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into a little-known period of Chinese history, predating the more famous Three Kingdoms era. Unlike the grand mausoleums of later emperors, Yongling Tomb is surprisingly understated, reflecting the relatively short-lived nature of the Former Shu kingdom. Prepare to be transported to a world of intrigue and historical significance. Wang Jian, a former Tang dynasty general, seized control of the Sichuan region in the late 9th century, establishing the Former Shu kingdom. He ruled for 18 years, a period of relative peace and prosperity amidst the chaos of the late Tang dynasty. Upon his death in 918 AD, he was interred in Yongling Tomb. The tomb remained largely undisturbed for centuries, only being rediscovered in the 20th century. Excavations revealed a wealth of artifacts, including intricate stone carvings, musical instruments, and the emperor's sarcophagus, providing invaluable insights into the culture and customs of the Former Shu. Today, visitors can explore the underground tomb chamber, marvel at the well-preserved stone carvings depicting musicians and dancers, and learn about the history of the Former Shu kingdom through informative exhibits. The site offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city of Chengdu, allowing you to connect with the past in a serene setting. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly linked to Yongling Tomb, you can easily find delicious Sichuan cuisine nearby. Be sure to try local specialties like Mapo Tofu or Dan Dan Noodles after your visit.
