Leshan Giant Buddha Guide
Leshan Giant Buddha: A Colossal Testament to Faith and Art Guide
Prepare to be awestruck by the Leshan Giant Buddha, a monumental sculpture carved into a cliff face overlooking the confluence of three rivers near Leshan, Sichuan. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest stone Buddha in the world, a testament to the ingenuity and devotion of ancient Chinese artisans. Marvel at its sheer scale, intricate details, and the breathtaking scenery that surrounds it. Construction of the Leshan Giant Buddha began in 713 AD during the Tang Dynasty, initiated by a monk named Haitong. Haitong believed that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the area and protect the local people. The project took over 90 years to complete, involving thousands of workers and a massive amount of stone. The Buddha stands 71 meters (233 feet) tall, with ears measuring 7 meters (23 feet) long and toes large enough to accommodate several people. Visitors to the Leshan Giant Buddha can descend the steep staircase carved into the cliff face to reach the Buddha's feet and appreciate its immense size up close. Alternatively, take a boat tour on the river for a panoramic view of the Buddha and the surrounding landscape. Explore the nearby Lingyun Temple, which houses a collection of Buddhist sculptures and artifacts. The area also offers opportunities for hiking and enjoying the natural beauty of the region. While in Leshan, be sure to try the local cuisine, known for its spicy and flavorful dishes, including the famous Leshan Bobo Chicken (钵钵鸡).
