This historic funicular offers a unique perspective on Valparaiso's charm and is a must-do for any visitor. The Ascensor Artilleria was inaugurated in 1893, making it one of the oldest funiculars in Valparaiso. It was built to connect the lower city with the Cerro Artilleria (Artillery Hill), which was strategically important for defense. The hill was named for the artillery batteries that were once stationed there. Over the years, the Ascensor Artilleria has become a symbol of Valparaiso's ingenuity and its unique urban landscape. It has survived earthquakes and economic downturns, continuing to serve as a vital link for residents and a captivating attraction for tourists. A ride on the Ascensor Artilleria is a short but memorable experience. At the top, you'll find the Museo Naval y MarĂtimo (Naval and Maritime Museum), which offers fascinating insights into Chile's maritime history. You can also stroll along the Paseo 21 de Mayo, a scenic promenade with stunning views and artisan shops. Don't forget to capture the colorful houses and street art that Valparaiso is famous for. While you're in Valparaiso, be sure to try some local seafood dishes like ceviche or empanadas de mariscos.
