Penguin Paradise: Explore the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve Guide
Just a short distance from Tongoy lies the Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt, a haven for marine life and a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. This protected area encompasses three islands: Isla Chañaral, Isla Damas, and Isla Choros, each teeming with diverse flora and fauna. The star attraction, of course, is the Humboldt penguin, but you'll also find sea lions, dolphins, various seabirds, and even whales depending on the season. Established in 1990, the reserve aims to protect the fragile ecosystem and the unique species that call it home. The Humboldt penguin, named after the cold Humboldt Current that flows along the Chilean coast, is an endangered species, and the reserve provides a crucial breeding ground for these charming birds. The islands also boast a rich history, having been used for guano extraction in the past, which highlights the importance of conservation efforts in restoring the natural balance. The primary activity in the reserve is taking a boat tour to the islands. Several tour operators in Punta de Choros (the closest mainland town) offer excursions that allow you to observe the penguins, sea lions, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Remember to bring binoculars for a closer look and a camera to capture the unforgettable sights. Some tours also include snorkeling or diving opportunities. Be sure to book your tour in advance, especially during peak season, as space is limited.
