Ojos del Salar Guide
Ojos del Salar: Float Effortlessly in the Desert's Secret Pools Guide
Prepare for an otherworldly experience at Ojos del Salar, two deep, circular lagoons nestled in the heart of the Atacama Desert. These "Eyes of the Salt Flat," as they're known in Spanish, offer a unique opportunity to float effortlessly due to their incredibly high salt concentration, even higher than the Dead Sea! Imagine yourself suspended in the cool, mineral-rich water, gazing up at the vast, cloudless sky – a truly unforgettable sensation. While Ojos del Salar doesn't boast a rich historical narrative, its geological formation is fascinating. These lagoons are believed to have formed from underground freshwater springs that dissolved the surrounding salt crust over millennia, creating these deep, almost perfectly round pools. The high salt content prevents most life from thriving, contributing to the surreal, almost alien landscape. The main activity at Ojos del Salar is, of course, floating! Don't forget to bring your swimsuit, towel, and flip-flops. There are basic changing facilities available. After your float, rinse off the salt in the nearby showers (the water is cold!). Many tours combine a visit to Ojos del Salar with other nearby attractions like Laguna Tebinquinche, offering a full afternoon of desert exploration. Remember to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as the desert sun is intense. There are no food vendors at the site, so pack your own snacks and plenty of water.
Transportation
The easiest way to reach Ojos del Salar is by joining a tour from San Pedro de Atacama. Many tour operators offer half-day excursions that include transportation. Alternatively, you can rent a car in San Pedro, but be aware that the road is unpaved and requires a 4x4 vehicle. From San Pedro, head south on Route 23, then turn west onto a dirt road signposted for Laguna Tebinquinche and Ojos del Salar. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
