Granville Island Guide
A Feast for the Senses: Art, Food, and Culture by the Sea! Guide
Granville Island is a vibrant and bustling public market and cultural district located on a peninsula in False Creek, Vancouver. Once an industrial manufacturing area, it has been transformed into a thriving hub for artisans, performers, food vendors, and shoppers. It's a must-visit destination for tourists seeking a unique and authentic Vancouver experience. Granville Island's history is rooted in its industrial past. In the early 20th century, the area was a major manufacturing centre, home to factories, sawmills, and shipyards. However, by the 1970s, the industrial activity had declined, and the area fell into disrepair. In the late 1970s, the federal government initiated a revitalization project, transforming the abandoned industrial buildings into a public market and cultural centre. Granville Island offers a wide range of activities for tourists. The Granville Island Public Market is the heart of the island, offering a vast array of fresh produce, seafood, meats, cheeses, baked goods, and gourmet foods. You can also find unique artisan crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. Street performers entertain visitors throughout the day, and there are numerous theatres and art galleries to explore. Kids Market is a dedicated area for children, with shops, play areas, and activities.
