Basin Head Provincial Park Guide
Basin Head: Singing Sands, History, and Coastal Beauty Guide
Welcome to Basin Head Provincial Park, home to the famous "Singing Sands" beach and the Basin Head Fisheries Museum! Located just a short drive from Souris, this park offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and family-friendly activities. Prepare to be amazed by the squeaky sands, learn about the region's fishing heritage, and soak up the stunning coastal scenery. Basin Head has a long and fascinating history, dating back to its early use as a Mi'kmaq fishing ground. Later, it became a vital fishing port for European settlers. The Basin Head Fisheries Museum, located within the park, tells the story of the area's fishing industry, showcasing traditional fishing methods, boat building techniques, and the lives of the fishermen and their families. Explore the museum's exhibits and learn about the importance of fishing to the local economy and culture. The main attraction at Basin Head is undoubtedly the "Singing Sands" beach. Similar to Souris Beach, the sand here produces a squeaking sound when you walk on it, due to its high silica content. The beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and building sandcastles. You can also try jumping off the bridge into the channel (a popular local tradition, but be sure to check the water depth and conditions first!). After a day at the beach, grab a bite to eat at the park's canteen, which offers a variety of snacks and light meals. While not a formal culinary tradition, enjoying a classic PEI potato salad or a seafood chowder by the beach is a quintessential Basin Head experience.
