Citadelle of Quebec Guide

A Fortress of History: Explore the Citadelle of Quebec Guide

The Citadelle of Quebec, also known as La Citadelle, is a star-shaped fortress perched atop Cap Diamant, overlooking Quebec City and the St. Lawrence River. It's not only a historic landmark but also an active military installation, serving as the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. A visit to the Citadelle offers a fascinating glimpse into Canada's military history and a chance to witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Construction of the Citadelle began in 1820, based on designs by British military engineers. It was built to defend Quebec City against potential American invasion, following the War of 1812. However, it never saw active combat. The site itself has a much longer history, dating back to the early days of New France. Samuel de Champlain, the founder of Quebec City, built a small fort on Cap Diamant in 1608. Over the centuries, various fortifications were built and rebuilt on the site, culminating in the current Citadelle. Visitors can explore the Citadelle through guided tours, which provide insights into its history, architecture, and military significance. A highlight is the Changing of the Guard ceremony, a colorful spectacle performed by the Royal 22e Régiment (the "Van Doos"). The Musée Royal 22e Régiment, located within the Citadelle, showcases the history and traditions of this distinguished regiment. While the Citadelle itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, Quebec City is renowned for its French-Canadian cuisine. Be sure to try local specialties like poutine, tourtière (meat pie), and maple syrup treats during your visit.

Transportation

The Citadelle is located within walking distance of many hotels and attractions in Old Quebec. Several bus routes also serve the area. Look for buses heading towards Place D'Armes or the Parliament Building. From either of those locations, it's a short walk uphill to the Citadelle's entrance.
