Cathedral Grove (MacMillan Provincial Park) Guide
Stand in Awe: Giants of Cathedral Grove Guide
Prepare to be humbled by the sheer scale and majesty of Cathedral Grove, located within MacMillan Provincial Park. This ancient forest, home to towering Douglas fir trees, some over 800 years old, offers a truly awe-inspiring experience. Walking among these giants is like stepping back in time, a reminder of the enduring power and beauty of nature. Cathedral Grove has a long and fascinating history. The area was originally part of the traditional territory of the Snaw-Naw-As First Nation. Logging was prevalent in the area in the early 20th century, but a concerted effort by conservationists led to the establishment of MacMillan Provincial Park in 1944, protecting this precious stand of old-growth forest. The park is named after H.R. MacMillan, a prominent forester and businessman who played a key role in its creation. The main activity in Cathedral Grove is simply walking and marveling at the trees. There are two main trails: one on either side of Highway 4. The south side trail is generally considered easier, while the north side trail offers more challenging terrain and closer views of some of the largest trees. Be sure to take your time, breathe in the fresh forest air, and appreciate the incredible biodiversity of this unique ecosystem. While there are no restaurants within the park itself, nearby communities offer a variety of dining options.
