Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park Guide

Othello Tunnels: A Journey Through Engineering Marvels Guide

Prepare to be amazed by the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, home to the iconic Othello Tunnels. Carved through solid granite, these tunnels are a testament to human ingenuity and the power of nature. Located just east of Hope, British Columbia, this park offers a unique blend of history, engineering, and stunning natural beauty. It's a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Fraser Valley. The Othello Tunnels were originally built in the early 20th century as part of the Kettle Valley Railway. Andrew McCulloch, a railway engineer, designed the tunnels to allow the railway to traverse the treacherous Coquihalla Canyon. The tunnels were named after Shakespeare's play "Othello" due to the dramatic and rugged landscape reminiscent of the play's setting. The railway operated until the 1960s, and the tunnels were later preserved as a provincial park. Today, visitors can walk or cycle through the tunnels, marveling at the engineering feat and the breathtaking views of the Coquihalla River. The well-maintained trail is relatively flat and easy, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp, as the tunnels can be quite dark. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the park itself, Hope offers a variety of dining options to satisfy your appetite after your exploration.
