Old Sow Whirlpool Guide
Witness the Power of Nature: The Old Sow Whirlpool Guide
Prepare to be amazed by the Old Sow Whirlpool, one of the largest tidal whirlpools in the Western Hemisphere! Located off the southern tip of Deer Island, this natural phenomenon is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. The whirlpool is created by the powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy rushing through a narrow channel, creating a swirling vortex of water that can reach impressive sizes. While not as dangerous as some whirlpools, it's still a sight to behold and a testament to the raw power of nature. The Old Sow Whirlpool has been a source of fascination for centuries. Local legends tell tales of ships being swallowed whole by the swirling waters, but in reality, the whirlpool is more of a spectacle than a threat to navigation. The name "Old Sow" is said to come from the grunting sounds the whirlpool makes as the water churns and bubbles, resembling the sounds of a pig. Smaller whirlpools, known as "piglets," often accompany the main whirlpool, adding to the spectacle. The best way to experience the Old Sow Whirlpool is by taking a boat tour. Several local operators offer tours that will take you right up to the edge of the whirlpool, providing a thrilling and unforgettable experience. You can also view the whirlpool from the shore at certain vantage points on Deer Island, but the view is much more impressive from the water. Keep an eye out for seals, porpoises, and other marine life that frequent the area. While on Deer Island, be sure to sample some of the local seafood, a staple of the island's culinary scene.
