Annapolis Tidal Generating Station Guide
Harnessing the Tides: Witness Renewable Energy in Action at the Annapolis Tidal Generating Station Guide
Prepare to be amazed by the Annapolis Tidal Generating Station, one of the few tidal power plants in the world! This unique facility harnesses the immense power of the tides in the Annapolis River to generate clean, renewable electricity. A visit here offers a fascinating look at innovative engineering and the potential of tidal energy as a sustainable energy source. Opened in 1984, the Annapolis Tidal Generating Station utilizes a barrage across the Annapolis River. As the tide rises, water flows into the Annapolis Basin. When the tide recedes, the water is released through a turbine, generating electricity. The station has a single Kaplan turbine and can generate up to 20 megawatts of power. While the station has faced environmental concerns regarding its impact on fish populations, it remains a significant example of tidal energy technology. Visitors can take a guided tour of the generating station to learn about the science behind tidal power and the engineering challenges involved in building and operating the facility. The tour includes a visit to the turbine hall, where you can see the massive turbine in action. Informative displays and exhibits explain the process of tidal energy generation and its potential for the future. While in the area, consider exploring the local restaurants and cafes, many of which feature fresh seafood caught in the Bay of Fundy, known for its extreme tides.
Transportation
The Annapolis Tidal Generating Station is located just outside of Annapolis Royal. From Annapolis Royal, follow Highway 1 towards Granville Ferry. The station is well-signed. Parking is available on-site. There is no direct public transportation to the station, so driving or cycling are the most convenient options.
