Founded in 1083 by Georgian Gregory Bakuriani, Bachkovo Monastery has a long and fascinating history. It served as a vital center of religious and cultural life throughout the centuries, surviving Ottoman rule and playing a significant role in the Bulgarian National Revival. The monastery's architecture reflects various periods, with Byzantine, Georgian, and Bulgarian influences evident in its buildings and artwork. The ossuary, dating back to the 12th century, is a particularly significant historical landmark. Visitors can explore the monastery's main church, adorned with breathtaking frescoes painted by renowned artists. The refectory, with its impressive murals depicting biblical scenes, is another must-see. You can also wander through the monastery's courtyards, admire the surrounding mountain scenery, and light a candle in one of the chapels.
