Selarón Steps Guide
Selarón Steps: A Riot of Color and a Tribute to the World Guide
The Selarón Steps, or Escadaria Selarón, are a world-famous staircase in Rio de Janeiro, a vibrant and ever-evolving mosaic created by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón. This unique landmark is a testament to artistic passion and a symbol of Rio's eclectic spirit. More than just a staircase, it's a living work of art that attracts visitors from all corners of the globe. Jorge Selarón began his ambitious project in 1990, initially as a personal endeavor to renovate the dilapidated steps in front of his house. He started by covering the steps with ceramic tiles, and as the project grew, he incorporated tiles from all over the world, donated by visitors and supporters. The steps became a constantly changing canvas, reflecting Selarón's artistic vision and the contributions of people from diverse cultures. Selarón dedicated his life to this project, and it became his most significant work. Visiting the Selarón Steps is a sensory experience. The vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and diverse collection of tiles create a visually stunning spectacle. Take your time to explore the steps, discover hidden details, and appreciate the artistry and dedication that went into creating this unique landmark. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding neighborhood. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the steps themselves, the nearby neighborhood of Lapa offers a wide array of dining options, from traditional Brazilian cuisine to international flavors.
