Drvengrad: A Wooden Town Born from a Filmmaker's Vision Guide

Drvengrad, also known as Küstendorf or Mećavnik, is a unique ethno-village created by the renowned Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica. Located in the Mokra Gora region of Serbia, this charming wooden town was built for his film "Life Is a Miracle" and has since become a popular tourist destination. Drvengrad is more than just a film set; it's a vibrant cultural center that hosts film festivals, concerts, and other events throughout the year. Drvengrad was conceived and built in 2004 as a response to Kusturica's desire to create a place where he could live and work in peace and harmony with nature. The town is built entirely of wood and features a central square named after Nikola Tesla, as well as streets named after famous figures like Bruce Lee, Diego Maradona, and Federico Fellini. The architecture is a blend of traditional Serbian and modern styles, creating a unique and whimsical atmosphere. Visitors to Drvengrad can explore the charming wooden houses, visit the cinema, art gallery, and library, and enjoy traditional Serbian cuisine at the local restaurant. The town also hosts the Küstendorf Film and Music Festival every January, attracting filmmakers and musicians from around the world. Be sure to try *gibanica* (a cheese pastry) and other local specialties at the restaurant. You can also purchase souvenirs and crafts from the village shops.

Transportation

The most convenient way to reach Drvengrad is by car. It's located near the Šargan Eight railway, another popular tourist attraction in the Mokra Gora region. You can also take a bus from Užice or Zlatibor to Mokra Gora, and then take a taxi or local bus to Drvengrad. The Šargan Eight railway also offers a scenic route to Mokra Gora, but it doesn't stop directly at Drvengrad.
