Shepherd's Huts (Kolibe) Guide
Prokoško Lake's Shepherd's Huts: A Living Tradition Guide
Escape the ordinary and step back in time at Prokoško Lake, a stunning glacial lake nestled high in the Vranica mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Here, you'll find not just breathtaking scenery, but a unique cultural landscape: the traditional shepherd's huts, known locally as *kolibe*. These rustic wooden structures, clustered around the lake, are more than just buildings; they're a living testament to the centuries-old tradition of transhumance, the seasonal movement of livestock between pastures. Imagine waking up to the sound of cowbells, breathing in the crisp mountain air, and experiencing a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for generations. The history of the *kolibe* at Prokoško Lake is intertwined with the history of the nomadic shepherds who have grazed their flocks on these mountains for centuries. These huts provided shelter during the summer months, allowing shepherds to tend to their animals and produce dairy products like cheese and *kajmak* (a creamy dairy product similar to clotted cream). While the number of active shepherds has dwindled in recent years, the *kolibe* remain, many now serving as simple guesthouses for tourists seeking an authentic experience. The architecture is simple yet functional, built from local wood and designed to withstand the harsh mountain climate. A visit to Prokoško Lake offers a variety of activities. Hiking around the lake and exploring the surrounding mountains is a must. You can also try your hand at fishing in the lake (with the appropriate permits, of course!). The real draw, however, is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. Stay in a *koliba*, sample traditional Bosnian cuisine prepared by your hosts (often including freshly made cheese and *kajmak*), and learn about the shepherd's way of life. Be sure to try *Bosanski lonac*, a hearty meat and vegetable stew traditionally cooked in a clay pot over an open fire. It's the perfect fuel for a day of exploring the mountains.
Transportation
Reaching Prokoško Lake requires some planning. The easiest way is to rent a car in Sarajevo or Fojnica. The road to the lake is partially unpaved and can be challenging, especially in wet conditions, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Alternatively, you can hire a local driver in Fojnica to take you to the lake. There are also occasional bus services from Fojnica to the village closest to the lake, but from there you'll need to hike or arrange for local transportation.
