Apparition Hill Guide

Where Heaven Touches Earth: Discover Apparition Hill Guide

Apparition Hill, known locally as Podbrdo, is the site where, according to local belief, the Virgin Mary first appeared to six visionaries in 1981. This rocky hillside has since become a focal point for pilgrims seeking spiritual solace and connection. The atmosphere is one of profound peace and prayer, drawing visitors from all corners of the globe. Even for those who are not religious, the natural beauty and the palpable sense of devotion make Apparition Hill a memorable place to visit. The alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje began on June 24, 1981. The six visionaries, then children and teenagers, claimed to have seen the Gospa (Our Lady) on Apparition Hill. These apparitions, which are still reported to occur by some of the visionaries, have transformed the once-obscure village of Medjugorje into a major pilgrimage destination. The Catholic Church has not officially recognized the apparitions, but it allows pilgrimages to Medjugorje and provides pastoral care for the pilgrims. The main activity on Apparition Hill is prayer and reflection. Pilgrims climb the rocky path to the site of the first apparitions, marked by a statue of the Virgin Mary. Many recite the rosary, meditate, and leave prayer intentions. The climb is challenging, requiring sturdy shoes, but the experience is deeply moving for many. The atmosphere is one of quiet reverence and shared faith. As with Cross Mountain, there are no specific culinary traditions directly linked to Apparition Hill, but Medjugorje offers a variety of dining options showcasing Bosnian cuisine.

Transportation

Apparition Hill is best reached on foot from Medjugorje. The path starts near the Blue Cross, a smaller cross located at the base of the hill. Taxis can take you to the Blue Cross, but the ascent to the statue of the Virgin Mary must be made on foot. Local buses connect Medjugorje with nearby towns, but they don't go directly to the base of Apparition Hill.
