Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire: A Heartwarming Haven for Rescued Donkeys Guide

Escape the ordinary and immerse yourself in the heartwarming world of the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire! This unique sanctuary provides a safe and loving home for over 700 rescued donkeys, offering visitors a chance to interact with these gentle creatures and learn about their stories. It's an unforgettable experience for animal lovers of all ages, and a wonderful way to support animal welfare on the island. The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in 1993 by Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman, who were deeply moved by the plight of the island's donkeys. Historically, donkeys were brought to Bonaire by the Spanish and Dutch to work in the salt pans and transport goods. As their usefulness declined with the advent of modern transportation, many were abandoned and left to fend for themselves. The sanctuary provides a safe haven, offering food, water, medical care, and a loving environment for these animals. A visit to the Donkey Sanctuary is a truly interactive experience. You can drive your car through the sanctuary, allowing the donkeys to approach and interact with you. Bring carrots or apples (available for purchase at the entrance) to feed them – they'll be delighted! You can also walk around the visitor center, learn about the donkeys' individual stories, and purchase souvenirs to support the sanctuary's important work. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the sanctuary itself, supporting local businesses in Kralendijk for lunch or dinner is a great way to complete your visit.
