National Memorial Chorten: A Beacon of Peace and Prosperity in Thimphu Guide

The National Memorial Chorten, also known as the Thimphu Chorten, is a prominent landmark in Thimphu, Bhutan. This stunning stupa is not just a visual delight but also a significant place of worship and remembrance. It is dedicated to world peace and prosperity and serves as a memorial to the late Third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the father of modern Bhutan. The Chorten was conceived by the Third Druk Gyalpo himself, who wished to build a monument to represent the mind of the Buddha. However, he passed away before its completion. His mother, Phuntsho Choden, and his son, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, completed the Chorten in 1974 according to his wishes. Unlike traditional stupas, the National Memorial Chorten does not enshrine human remains. Instead, it houses numerous religious paintings and statues, representing different aspects of Buddhist philosophy. Visitors to the National Memorial Chorten can circumambulate the structure, spinning the prayer wheels and absorbing the peaceful atmosphere. The Chorten is a popular gathering place for locals, who come to pray, meditate, and socialize. Observe the intricate details of the Chorten's architecture and the vibrant colors of the religious paintings. The site offers stunning views of Thimphu valley. While the Chorten itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, Thimphu offers a chance to experience authentic Bhutanese cuisine. Try ema datshi, the national dish made with chilies and cheese, or momos, steamed dumplings filled with meat or vegetables.
