Founded in the 12th century by Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, the temple is dedicated to Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Legend has it that Phajo Drugom Zhigpo chose this site after witnessing a self-manifested image of Avalokiteśvara. The temple houses a central statue of the eleven-headed, thousand-armed Avalokiteśvara. Parents traditionally visit the temple to receive blessings for their newborns and choose auspicious names for their children. Tourists visiting Changangkha Lhakhang can participate in several activities. You can circumambulate the temple, spinning the prayer wheels and absorbing the peaceful atmosphere. Observe the monks chanting and performing rituals. Light butter lamps as an offering. Take in the stunning views of the Thimphu valley. Remember to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered) and remove your shoes before entering the temple. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the temple, you can find numerous restaurants in Thimphu offering authentic Bhutanese cuisine, such as ema datshi (chili cheese stew) and momos (dumplings).
