Waterfall Rappelling (Bocawina) Guide

Bocawina's Plunge: An Adrenaline Rush in the Belizean Rainforest Guide

Imagine yourself suspended amidst the lush, vibrant rainforest of Belize, the roar of cascading water filling your ears. This is waterfall rappelling at Bocawina National Park, an unforgettable adventure for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. Descend down the face of Antelope Falls or Bocawina Falls, feeling the cool spray on your skin as you navigate the slippery rocks. It's an exhilarating experience that combines physical challenge with the breathtaking beauty of the Belizean jungle. Bocawina National Park, established to protect the area's rich biodiversity and Mayan history, offers a glimpse into Belize's natural and cultural heritage. While the park itself doesn't have a long, documented history in the traditional sense, the surrounding area is steeped in Mayan history. Evidence of ancient Mayan settlements can be found nearby, reminding visitors of the people who once thrived in this very landscape. The park's waterfalls, carved over millennia by the relentless flow of water, are a testament to the power and beauty of nature. Waterfall rappelling is the star attraction at Bocawina, but the park offers plenty of other activities to keep you entertained. Hike through the rainforest to discover hidden waterfalls and swimming holes. Go birdwatching and try to spot some of Belize's colorful avian residents. Explore the Mayan ruins that dot the landscape. And after a day of adventure, relax in a hammock and listen to the sounds of the jungle. Local guides often prepare traditional Belizean meals for visitors, featuring dishes like rice and beans, stewed chicken, and fresh fruit.

Transportation

Getting to Bocawina National Park is best done by renting a car or hiring a taxi from Hopkins or Dangriga. The drive is approximately 30-45 minutes from Hopkins. Public transportation is limited. From Dangriga, you can take a bus heading towards Independence/Mango Creek and ask to be dropped off near the Bocawina turnoff. However, you'll still need to arrange transportation for the remaining distance to the park entrance, which is a few miles down a dirt road.
