It's an adventurer's paradise and a fascinating glimpse into Belize's rich cultural and natural heritage. The Mayflower Bocawina Archaeological Reserve is home to several Mayan sites, including the unexcavated plazas and temples of Mayflower and Maintzunun. These sites date back to the Classic Period of Mayan civilization (250-900 AD), offering a glimpse into the lives and culture of the people who once inhabited this area. While much of the sites remain covered by the jungle, the visible structures and artifacts provide a tantalizing glimpse into the past. The reserve's name, Bocawina, comes from the Mayan word for "mouth of the well," referring to the numerous waterfalls and rivers that flow through the area. The reserve offers a variety of activities for visitors. Hike through the jungle to explore the Mayan ruins, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as monkeys, birds, and iguanas. Cool off with a swim in the refreshing pools beneath the waterfalls, including Bocawina Falls, Antelope Falls, and Three Sisters Falls. For the adventurous, try rappelling down Bocawina Falls, a thrilling experience that combines adrenaline with stunning natural scenery. The reserve also offers opportunities for birdwatching, cave exploration, and camping. While not specifically known for culinary traditions within the reserve itself, nearby Hopkins Village offers a taste of Garifuna cuisine, a unique blend of African, Caribbean, and indigenous flavors. Try hudut (fish cooked in coconut milk with mashed plantains) or sere (a fish stew).
