St. Nicholas Abbey Guide

A Glimpse into Barbados' Plantation Past Guide

St. Nicholas Abbey is a beautifully preserved Jacobean mansion located in Saint Peter, Barbados. Explore the grand house, wander through the lush gardens, and witness the traditional sugar-making process. It's a truly immersive experience that brings Barbadian history to life. Built in 1658, St. Nicholas Abbey is one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. It was originally owned by Colonel Benjamin Berringer, and later passed to Sir John Gay Alleyne. The Abbey has remained largely unchanged over the centuries, preserving its original architectural features and providing a unique window into 17th-century plantation life. The property has been owned by the Warren family since 2006, who have continued to restore and preserve the estate. Visitors can tour the Great House, furnished with period antiques and offering insights into the lives of the plantation owners. Explore the rum distillery and learn about the process of making St. Nicholas Abbey Rum, a premium Barbadian spirit. Take a ride on the steam railway through the sugarcane fields, and wander through the beautiful gardens, which feature a variety of tropical plants and flowers. The Abbey also offers a cafe where you can enjoy lunch or afternoon tea, featuring local Barbadian cuisine. Don't miss the opportunity to sample the St. Nicholas Abbey Rum Punch, a delicious and refreshing cocktail made with their own rum.
