Animal Flower Cave: Where the Ocean Meets the Land Guide

The Animal Flower Cave, located on the northernmost tip of Barbados in Saint Lucy, is a stunning natural sea cave offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. It's a unique geological formation and a popular tourist attraction, providing a glimpse into the raw beauty of the island's coastline. The cave's name comes from the sea anemones, locally known as "animal flowers," that were once abundant in its pools. The Animal Flower Cave is estimated to be around 500,000 years old. It was formed by wave action eroding the cliffs over millennia. The cave is below the present sea level, and the height of the cave roof gives an indication of the amount that Barbados has risen out of the sea over the ages. The "animal flowers" themselves have become less common due to environmental changes, but the cave's beauty and geological significance remain. Visitors can explore the cave with a guided tour, which typically lasts around 30 minutes. The tour includes a descent into the cave, where you can see the rock pools, the sea anemones (though fewer than in the past), and the stunning views of the ocean through the cave's openings. Above the cave, there's a restaurant and bar offering panoramic views, as well as craft stalls selling local souvenirs. You can also walk along the cliffs and enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery.

Transportation

Getting to the Animal Flower Cave is best done by car or taxi, as public transportation to the northern tip of the island is less frequent. If taking a bus, you'll likely need to take a bus to Speightstown and then another bus towards the north. Check local bus schedules for the most up-to-date information.
