Parliament Buildings: A Journey Through Barbadian History Guide
Step back in time and delve into the heart of Barbadian democracy at the Parliament Buildings, a striking complex located in the capital city of Bridgetown. These iconic buildings, with their neo-Gothic architecture and rich history, stand as a testament to Barbados' journey towards independence and self-governance. More than just a government seat, they are a symbol of national pride and a must-see for anyone interested in the island's cultural heritage. The Parliament Buildings, also known as the Public Buildings, were completed in 1874 and designed by English architect Henry Rawlins. Constructed of local coral limestone, the buildings feature intricate details, including stained-glass windows depicting scenes from Barbadian history and impressive clock towers that dominate the Bridgetown skyline. The East Wing houses the Senate, while the West Wing is home to the House of Assembly. The National Heroes Gallery is also located within the complex. Visitors can take guided tours of the Parliament Buildings to learn about the Barbadian parliamentary system, the history of the buildings, and the island's journey to independence. Witness the changing of the guard ceremony, a colorful display of Barbadian military tradition. Afterwards, stroll through National Heroes Square, located adjacent to the Parliament Buildings, and admire the statue of Lord Nelson, a controversial figure in Barbadian history. The square is also a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike. While in Bridgetown, be sure to sample some of the local Bajan cuisine, such as cou-cou and flying fish, a national dish.
