The garden's history dates back to 1775 when Thomas Hickling, an American merchant, established a summer residence here. He created a romantic garden featuring canals, ponds, and exotic plants. Over the centuries, the garden has evolved and expanded, incorporating new species and features. In the 1930s, it was acquired by the Bensaude family, who transformed it into the magnificent botanical garden we see today, showcasing plants from around the world thriving in the island's unique microclimate. A visit to Terra Nostra Garden offers a variety of activities. Explore the extensive collection of camellias, azaleas, and other exotic plants. Take a dip in the iconic thermal pool, known for its iron-rich, orange-tinted water, believed to have therapeutic properties. Wander through the themed gardens, including the Cycad Valley and the Fern Collection. For a truly immersive experience, consider a guided tour to learn more about the garden's history and botanical treasures. Don't forget to enjoy a meal at the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel restaurant, which often features local Azorean cuisine.
