Granite Island: Penguin Paradise and Coastal Charm Guide
Welcome to Granite Island, a captivating destination just off the coast of Victor Harbor in South Australia! This island offers a unique blend of natural beauty, fascinating wildlife, and a touch of history, making it a must-see for any visitor to the Fleurieu Peninsula. Prepare to be enchanted by the stunning coastal scenery, the chance to encounter adorable Little Penguins, and the overall relaxed atmosphere of this island gem. Granite Island's history is intertwined with the early European settlement of South Australia. Originally known as "Kaiki" by the local Ramindjeri people, the island was renamed Granite Island by Matthew Flinders in 1802 due to its distinctive granite formations. In the late 19th century, a causeway was built to connect the island to the mainland, facilitating the transport of goods and passengers. The island also played a role in the whaling industry, with whale sightings still common in the waters surrounding it. Today, Granite Island is a protected area, dedicated to preserving its natural environment and cultural heritage. Granite Island offers a variety of activities for all ages. Take a leisurely stroll along the scenic walking trails, marvel at the dramatic granite cliffs, and keep an eye out for the resident Little Penguins during a guided penguin tour (highly recommended!). You can also ride the iconic horse-drawn tram across the causeway, a truly unique experience. For the adventurous, there's rock climbing and fishing opportunities. Don't forget to visit the Granite Island Recreation and Nature Park, where you can learn more about the island's history and ecology. While there aren't specific restaurants *on* the island, Victor Harbor offers a plethora of dining options just a short walk away, from fresh seafood to classic pub fare.
