Rottnest Island Lighthouse (Wadjemup Lighthouse) Guide
Guiding Lights and Island Views: Discover the Wadjemup Lighthouse Guide
Perched atop Wadjemup Hill, the Wadjemup Lighthouse, also known as the Rottnest Island Lighthouse, stands as a beacon of history and a vantage point for breathtaking panoramic views. A visit to this iconic landmark is a must for anyone exploring Rottnest Island, offering a glimpse into the island's maritime past and a chance to soak in the stunning coastal scenery. The first lighthouse on Rottnest Island was built in 1851, but due to its low elevation, it was often obscured by fog and proved ineffective. The current lighthouse, constructed in 1896, stands taller and more prominently, guiding ships safely through the treacherous waters surrounding the island. It played a crucial role in maritime navigation for decades and remains an important historical landmark. The lighthouse was automated in 1988. Take a guided tour of the lighthouse to learn about its history, construction, and the lives of the keepers who once lived and worked there. Climb to the top for unparalleled 360-degree views of Rottnest Island, the surrounding ocean, and even the mainland on a clear day. The views are especially spectacular at sunset. While on Rottnest Island, be sure to explore the island's other attractions, such as its beautiful beaches, unique wildlife (including the famous quokkas), and historical sites.
