Descend into Majesty: Gibson Steps and the Twelve Apostles Guide
Gibson Steps, located along the Great Ocean Road near Princetown, offers a dramatic and unforgettable experience. This stunning coastal attraction provides access to the beach below, where you can witness the towering limestone stacks of the Twelve Apostles from a unique perspective. Prepare to be awestruck by the power of the ocean and the beauty of the rugged coastline. While not steeped in historical events in the traditional sense, the Gibson Steps themselves have a history of human intervention. Originally carved into the cliff face by the Kirrae Whurrong people, they were later improved by Hugh Gibson, a local settler, to provide access to the beach for collecting supplies and fishing. The steps have been maintained and improved over the years to allow visitors to safely descend to the beach. The main activity at Gibson Steps is descending the 86 steps to the beach and marveling at the towering limestone stacks. From the beach, you can walk along the sand and get a closer look at the Apostles. Be aware of the tides and weather conditions, as the beach can be dangerous during high tide or rough seas. Photography enthusiasts will find endless opportunities to capture the dramatic scenery. While there are no food vendors at Gibson Steps, Princetown offers a few cafes and restaurants.
