The island's name, "Rotte Nest" (meaning "rat's nest"), was given by Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh in 1696, who mistook the quokkas for large rats. Transportation
The primary way to reach Rottnest Island is by ferry. Several ferry companies operate from Perth (Barrack Street Jetty) and Fremantle. The ferry journey takes approximately 25-45 minutes from Fremantle and 90 minutes from Perth. Once on the island, the best way to get around is by bicycle, which can be rented on the island or pre-booked online. A hop-on-hop-off bus service is also available.
