Prepare to be mesmerized by the Glow Worm Tunnel, a truly unique natural wonder nestled in the Wollemi National Park near Lithgow. This abandoned railway tunnel is now home to thousands of glow worms, creating a breathtaking spectacle of bioluminescence that will leave you in awe. Imagine stepping into a dark, cool tunnel and being surrounded by a galaxy of tiny, living lights – it's an experience unlike any other. The tunnel's history is as fascinating as its current inhabitants. Originally built in the early 20th century as part of the Newnes railway line, it served to transport shale oil from the Newnes oil refinery. However, the railway line was eventually closed in the 1930s, and the tunnel was abandoned. Over time, the damp, dark environment became the perfect habitat for glow worms, transforming it into the magical place it is today. Visiting the Glow Worm Tunnel is an adventure! You can hike or bike along the Old Coach Road to reach the tunnel entrance. Remember to bring a torch (red light is best to minimize disturbance to the glow worms) and wear sturdy shoes as the tunnel floor can be uneven and wet. Once inside, turn off your torch and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. The glow worms will gradually reveal themselves, creating a stunning display of natural light. While there aren't specific culinary traditions associated with the tunnel itself, Lithgow offers a range of cafes and restaurants where you can refuel after your adventure.
Transportation
The Glow Worm Tunnel is best accessed by car. From Lithgow, take the Wolgan Road towards Newnes. The Old Coach Road turnoff is well-signposted. The last section of the road is unsealed and can be rough, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially after rain. Parking is available at the Old Coach Road trailhead. From there, it's a 2-3 hour return hike or bike ride to the tunnel.
