Maguk, also known as Barramundi Gorge, is a stunning natural swimming hole and waterfall located in Kakadu National Park. With its crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and lush vegetation, Maguk is a must-see destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Like much of Kakadu, Maguk holds significant cultural importance for the local Aboriginal people. The Bininj/Mungguy people have lived in this region for tens of thousands of years, and the gorge and surrounding landscape are integral to their cultural heritage. The area is rich in Dreamtime stories and traditional knowledge, and visitors are encouraged to respect the cultural significance of the site. At Maguk, you can swim in the cool, clear waters of the plunge pool, hike to the top of the waterfall for panoramic views, or simply relax on the sandy beach and soak up the sun. The walk to the gorge is a moderate 1km (one way) through monsoon rainforest. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including barramundi in the water and various bird species in the trees. Remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
Transportation
Access to Maguk is via a 4WD track. From the Kakadu Highway, turn onto the unsealed road leading to Maguk. The road is generally accessible during the dry season, but a 4WD vehicle is recommended. Check road conditions before you travel. The walk from the car park to the gorge is approximately 1km.
