Paronella Park Guide
Paronella Park: A Spanish Dream in the Australian Rainforest Guide
Step into a fairytale at Paronella Park, a unique and enchanting attraction nestled in the heart of the Queensland rainforest. This heritage-listed park is the realization of one man's dream: José Paronella, a Spanish immigrant who built a castle, gardens, and waterfalls in the 1930s. Explore the ruins of his magnificent creation, wander through the lush gardens, and listen to the stories of love, loss, and perseverance that shaped this extraordinary place. Paronella Park is a truly unforgettable experience that will capture your imagination. José Paronella arrived in Australia from Spain in 1913 with a dream of building a castle. After years of hard work and saving, he purchased a plot of land near Innisfail and began construction in 1929. He and his wife, Margarita, built the castle, a ballroom, picnic areas, tennis courts, and even a hydroelectric plant to power the park. Paronella Park became a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, a testament to José's vision and determination. However, floods and fires took their toll over the years, leaving the park in ruins. Today, it is being lovingly restored by its current owners, who are dedicated to preserving José's legacy. A visit to Paronella Park includes a guided day tour and an optional night tour. During the day tour, you'll learn about the history of the park, explore the ruins of the castle, and wander through the beautiful gardens. The night tour offers a different perspective, with the park illuminated by lights and the sounds of the rainforest coming alive. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as there is a fair amount of walking involved. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the park itself, the nearby town of Mena Creek offers a variety of dining options.
