After his ship, the Endeavour, struck a reef nearby, Cook climbed a high point (believed to be Mount Sorrow) to survey the damage. His feelings of despair and frustration at the situation led him to name the mountain accordingly. While the name reflects a moment of hardship, the mountain itself offers a sense of awe and wonder. The primary activity at Mount Sorrow is hiking. The Mount Sorrow Ridge Trail is a challenging 6-7 hour return hike. Be prepared for steep inclines, uneven terrain, and humid conditions. It's essential to wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack insect repellent. The trail is well-marked, but it's advisable to inform someone of your hiking plans before setting off. The summit offers unparalleled views, making it a perfect spot for photography and enjoying the natural beauty of the Daintree.
