Where Bush Meets Beach: Explore Royal National Park Guide

Royal National Park, just south of Sydney, is a natural wonderland boasting dramatic coastal cliffs, pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and tranquil waterways. As Australia's oldest national park and the second oldest in the world, it offers a diverse range of landscapes and activities for every type of adventurer. Whether you're seeking a challenging hike, a relaxing swim, or a peaceful escape into nature, Royal National Park has something to offer. Established in 1879, Royal National Park was originally known as "The National Park." It was renamed in 1955 after Queen Elizabeth II visited. For millennia, the area was inhabited by Aboriginal people, and evidence of their presence can still be found in the park's rock engravings and archaeological sites. The park's history is intertwined with the story of European settlement and the ongoing efforts to protect its natural and cultural heritage. Royal National Park offers a plethora of activities. Hike along the iconic Coast Track, swim in the refreshing waters of Wattamolla Lagoon, kayak or canoe on the Hacking River, or simply relax on one of the park's many beautiful beaches. Birdwatching is also a popular pastime, with a diverse range of bird species inhabiting the park's various ecosystems. While there are no specific culinary traditions within the park itself, pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the designated picnic areas, or grab a bite to eat at the cafe in Audley.
