Sevanavank Monastery: A Jewel on the Azure Lake Guide

Perched atop a peninsula overlooking the stunning Lake Sevan, Sevanavank Monastery is a must-see destination in Armenia. This iconic landmark offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, combined with a rich history and spiritual significance. Prepare to be captivated by the beauty of the location and the architectural charm of the monastery. Sevanavank's history began in 874 AD when Princess Mariam, daughter of King Ashot I, ordered the construction of two churches on the island (which was then an island, before the lake's water level was artificially lowered). The monastery was built as a place of penance for noblemen who had committed sins. The monks who lived here were known for their strict ascetic lifestyle. Over time, Sevanavank became an important religious and cultural center. Today, visitors can explore the two remaining churches, Surb Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), both excellent examples of Armenian medieval architecture. Climb the steps to the monastery and enjoy the unparalleled views of Lake Sevan. You can light a candle inside the churches, admire the intricate khachkars (stone crosses), and learn about the history of the monastery from local guides. Vendors outside the monastery sell souvenirs and local crafts. While not directly related to the monastery, the area around Lake Sevan is known for its fresh fish, particularly Ishkhan (Sevan trout), which you can enjoy at nearby restaurants.
